At the invitation of School of Microelectronics and Communication Engineering of Chongqing University, Professor Richard W. Ziolkowski of University of Arizona visited Chongqing University. As an internationally renowned scholar in electromagnetic field and microwave technology, Professor Ziolkowski is not only a named Professor in the Department of electronic and computer engineering and professor in the school of optics of the University of Arizona, but also a Fellow of both IEEE and OSA Association. He was employed as the chairman of IEEE Antenna and Radio Wave Propagation Association in 2005.
On the morning of October 25, 2019, Professor Ziolkowski gave an academic lecture entitled "Engineering passive and active metamaterial inspired electrically small radiating systems" in 510 conference room. The lecture was presided over by Professor Tang Mingchun. Professor Ziolkowski first introduced the basic theoretical knowledge and research background of electromagnetic metamaterials, and briefly introduced the latest research trends of artificial materials such as ENG, DNG and MNG. Then, Professor began to introduce how to combine this kind of metamaterial design idea with antenna design to realize the design breakthrough of metamaterial inspired antenna. Starting from the design of passive metamaterial inspired electric small antenna based on near-field parasitic resonance, a large number of antenna technology design examples are listed from three aspects: antenna miniaturization, bandwidth expansion and directivity improvement. To the controllable antenna, non foster antenna, flexible antenna and multifunctional antenna designed by active loading technology. Finally, he stressed that artificial materials have had a great impact on society. Combining different high-performance materials to obtain the desired electromagnetic characteristics will be a major development trend of antenna technology in the future. After the lecture, the teachers and students present actively asked questions and Professor Ziolkowski answered patiently. The discussion atmosphere was very harmonious. During the on-site questioning, Professor Ziolkowski was deeply impressed by the fluent oral English, deep thinking and positive interaction between teachers and students of our school. He said that at present, good progress has been made in scientific research cooperation with the Institute of communication engineering. He looked forward to his next visit to Chongqing University to strengthen further exchanges and cooperation with each other.
Subsequently, Professor Ziolkowski came to the antenna and radio wave propagation Laboratory of the School, visited the recent research results of the laboratory in non foster antenna, Huygens source antenna, flexible antenna, filter antenna and so on, and deeply exchanged the latest research status of the laboratory with teachers and students.
